The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment

Prof.-Thomas-J.O.-Afullo,--Executive-DeanThe Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment prides itself in the tradition of producing technologists, technicians and artisans for the engineering and related work. The significance of this partnership was recently emphasized by the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), Ms Betty Maina, and the Principal of KPUC, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Francis Aduol. The major objectives of this MoC include: engaging in jointly applied research; sharing technological advances between the 700 KAM constituents and KPUC; providing industrial attachments for not only students, but also, uniquely, for academic staff. This attachment of staff ensures that the needs of industry are always taken into consideration and updated in the training in this Faculty, thus giving advantage to KPUC students.

The Faculty has approximately 3,000 students, making it the largest single destina- tion for training at tertiary level in engineering and technology in the country. We offer training at Certificate, Diploma, and Degree levels. We are confident that this partnership with KAM will reassure the industrial partners that FEBE intends to continue its original mandate of training its graduates for the world of work. This will therefore place all FEBE graduates in good stead in the job market.

The Faculty continues to upgrade its capacity to offer practical and up to date training in order to produce graduates with skills for industry. The Departments of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, as well as Electrical and Electronic Engineering were recently selected by the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology to receive equipment worth over Kshs 700 million. This equipment will convert the workshops and some training laboratories in the two Departments into centres of excellence within the wider Eastern Africa Region.
