POLYICT

Mr.-Derrick-H.-O.-OsiroPOLYICT is a support Centre that provides and facilitates ICT services to The Kenya Polytechnic University College (KPUC) in achieving it mandate.  The Centre is also laying the foundations to allow the college transits smoothly to a University of Technology.
The staff at the POLYICT strives to ensure that KPUC improves the quality of life through utilization of ICT structures and services in teaching and learning and therefore play a part in the fulfillment of Vision 2030.
In Order to align itself with the University’s ICT roadmap towards 2015, POLYICT has tentatively identified and began to operationalize four main objectives:

Enhance ICT staff productivity and optimization through:

  • Strengthening ICT staff (number and expertise) to correspond with ever changing challenges in ICT.
  • Promoting and implementing Performance contracting mechanisms Or other
  • Performance monitoring systems and create an enabling environment of equitable reward systems;
  • Automating the ICT services (fault detection, reporting procedures, Network monitoring etc.) to maximize the available personnel throughput/potentials.

Develop and systematically implement Scalable ICT infrastructures through:

  • Local Area Network (LAN) Expansion and upgrade
  • Server room upgrade
  • Designing and implementing a state of art Data Centre to match the high speed computing needs of the university
  • Optimizing student/staff: computer ratio

Develop and continually Review Sustainable ICT –Enabled Learning support strategies for KPUC that provides flexible and convenient access to learning contents through:

  • Development of e-content delivery modalities that matches individual learning styles
  • Development and improvising innovative ways of integrating ICT in the classroom
  • Provision of fast and reliable Internet facilities to enable KPUC accomplish its mandate
  • Establishment of e-repository for research findings and other internally generated learning resources
  • Establishment of video conferencing facilities that integrate with the e-learning platforms
  • Deployment of wired and wireless infrastructure for that facilitates access to University resources using Cell-phones, Laptops, etc

Provide ICT Platform that supports Academic, Administrative and Management processes through:

  • Acquisition or development of scalable management Information System that support a range of new and innovative services including flexible enrolment, self-service options
  • Installation of a unified communication Infrastructure (through deployment of a modern IP-PABX)
  • Installation of an internal broadcasting infrastructure utilizing an up-to-date media centre facilities and accessing the services of students and staff in the media fields.

Towards the end of 2011, KPUC kicked off the automation process by acquiring a Library Management, a Financial Management System, a Procurement System and an Asset Management System. Their implementation is near completion. The next major projects in this area will be the acquisition and implementation of an Academic Management system and a Human Resource Management System. The process of procurement is expected to begin in April 2012 and implementation is expected to be complete by the end of this year. This will improve efficiency in service delivery, transparency, data integrity, and flexible access to information.
LAN expansions are on-going. More powerful and efficient servers are being acquired to handle the expected demand of the growing KPUC community.
In addition, to meet the increasing demand, a wireless internet link is currently being upgraded to fibre to enable the institution enhance the internet speeds to support Teaching, Learning and Research. Soon, the KPUC community will be enjoying internet speeds of almost 30 Mb/s from the current 19Mb/s.
POLYICT will endeavour to keep the machines running and the data flowing so that KPUC can train for the real world and thereby contribute to the attainment of vision 2030.
