Humboldt Kolleg/Conference Nairobi April 9-12, 2013

First Announcement and Call for Abstracts
We are privileged to announce that the third Humboldt Kolleg/Conference in Kenya will be held in Nairobi from April 9-12, 2013. This time the Conference will be hosted by Kenya Polytechnic University College, a substituent college of the University of Nairobi. The conference is aimed at bringing together researchers in various fields from Kenya and the east African region to present and discuss various topics on environmental research and monitoring and its role in environmental protection and attainment of sustainable development in line with the national vision 2030. Environmental research and monitoring being a multidisciplinary theme, we expect participation of scientists in various areas including physical and life sciences, environmental and biomedical sciences, social sciences and engineering as well as policy makers from various sectors.

CONFERENCE THEME:
Environmental Monitoring Research Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in Kenya and the Impact on the National Vision 2030.

THE TOPICS:
The sub-themes will include

  • Agriculture, Wildlife, Environment and Water Resources: monitoring, protection and management
  • Industrial and Urban Pollution problem: Toxic waste, nature, sources, impact and management.
  • Environmental laws, Global Trade, Food safety standards and Bio-safety
  • Integrated Environmental Monitoring (contaminants, toxic effects and indicators), Biodiversity, Impact Assessment and Climate Change.
  • Technology, Engineering and Environmental pollution Control
  • Conventional and Alternative Energies: Environmental Impact and Pollution Control.

A number of invited speakers are expected to make presentations based on the sub-themes. However, we are calling upon those wishing to present papers, oral or poster, under those sub-themes to send their abstracts to us before 10th January 2013.

Participation:
The conference is open to all based on acceptance of abstracts. Participants will be informed after abstracts have been accepted.
The success of the conference will mainly depend on the participation of the Humboldt Alumni in Kenya. All Humboldt Alumni will be participating.
Young scientists and researchers from universities and other institutions who have recently graduated with Masters and PhDs are particularly encouraged to send their abstracts.
Invited speakers are expected from Kenya and other countries including Germany, Australia, USA and UK, among others.

Sponsorship:
Limited accommodation and transport allowances will be available for local participants who are invited to present in the conference, in particular, those coming from outside Nairobi.

Abstracts Submission:
Abstracts should be in English only, not exceeding 300 words in MS-Word 2003/2007, Times Roman, Font 12, spacing 1.5. The titles should be in Roman Times Font 14 and bolded.
Accepted abstracts will be published in a book of abstracts. After the conference the full papers will be published in conference proceedings.

Deadline for submission of Abstracts is 10th January 2013.
