Appointment of Executive Dean, Faculty of Liberal & Professional Studies

The University Council, pursuant to the provisions of the Kenya Polytechnic University College Statute, 2010, Statute IX, has appointed Prof. Emily Achieng Akuno as the Executive Dean, Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies (FLPS). The appointment was carried out through a competitive recruitment process. Prof. Akuno started her academic career at Kenyatta University as Graduate Assistant in 1989 and rose through the ranks to the position of Associate Processor in Music in 2002. At Kenyatta University, she also served as Head of Department of Music in the period 2002 – 2004.

Between 2007 and 2010 she was an Associate Professor and Head of School of Music at the University of Kwazulu Natal in South Africa. In 2010 she took up the position of Associate Professor in Music at Maseno University. Prof. Akuno is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music and Performing Arts, School of Creative Arts and Technologies. She holds a PhD degree in Music (Kingston University, Surrey, UK, 1997, MMus (Northwestern State University, USA, 1988) and BEd (Arts – Music) (Kenyatta University, 1986). In 2011 Prof. Akuno joined the Kenya Polytechnic University College as Associate Professor in Music. At the Kenya Polytechnic, Prof. Akuno has also been the Director of Centre for Creative and Cultural Industries.

Prof. Akuno is an accomplished scholar in Music. She has published and presented some seventynine articles in scholarly journals and conferences. She has also supervised some twenty-one
Masters’ theses as well as nine PhD theses. Prof. Akuno is the current Interim Secretary General of the International Society for Music Education (SME) and is a member of several international and national professional organizations in Music.
